Biomechanical comparison of different aligner modifications to the palatal movement of incisors

The majority of studies to date indicate that the forces and moments applied by aligners without modifications are insufficient for physical tooth movement. The aim of our in-vitro study was to investigate different modifications of physical tooth movement with simulated palatal incisor movements. The experimental setup consisted of an upper jaw model with separated tooth 11, which could be mounted on a 3D F/M sensor and moved by a hexapod. PET-G aligners (Duran®, Scheu-Dental) with three negative shapes (sphere, cylinder or crescent) with different depths (0.5 to 2.0 mm) attached in the model were investigated. All modifications investigated were able to generate moments that counteract tilting. This in-vitro data indicates the potential of modified aligners for physical labio-palatal or torquing incisor movements. However, this hypothesis still has to be proven with clinical studies.
